Apply GraphQL incremental-delivery patches to the initial payload and return
the merged { data, extensions, status } document. Each later document is one
patch, or an array of patches (applied in order).
The root field need not be in the initial payload: a patch at ["<root>"] is
merged into data, and the accumulated data is written back so a body whose
first document is a bare patch still yields a well-formed { data: … }
envelope. Non-patch documents never contribute patches; the first one is used
as the base payload.
